Meditation
| Meditation is a spiritual exercise which calms,
expands and clarifies the mind, enabling one to experience the depth,
beauty, mystery and innocence of one's true nature. Meditation restores and harmonises the body's energies, and promotes good health and a sense of well being. The immediate aim of meditation is to liberate the mind from conceptual thoughts and to raise one's consciousness. The ultimate aim of meditation is to reach a state of blissful enlightenment widely known as Nirvana. Once Nirvana is reached, wisdom is obtained and the cares of the flesh disappear. Meditation can be active or passive. Active meditation usually takes the form of a lengthy sequence of well-learned smoothly flowing graceful movements performed quietly, slowly and effortlessly. Passive meditation usually takes the form of sitting quietly and contemplating either a specific object or nothingness. Some people meditate on their own. Others meditate in a group. Because of what we are, in clear distinction from who we are, group meditation may be less demanding and be more productive and rewarding than solo meditation. Conversely, those who practice solo meditation may enjoy greater freedom from the constraints of time than those who meditate in a group. Meditation may be enhanced if clothes are dispensed with. Clothes not only restrict the body, disrupt the free flow of vital energies and distort body images, they also mask reality. Those who meditate regularly radiate vitality and positive energy, and are socially attractive. |
